About
JANICE WAHNICH
Artist - Portrait Painter - Print Maker
I am a London based figurative artist, portrait painter & print maker, working from my studio in Hampton.
My earliest memories were of drawing and painting, whenever I could, & with my family support, and encouragement made me realise from the beginning that that was the direction I wanted to take.
My art today stems from a lifelong fascination in every day life & the people that I encounter. I record moments caught in time, my reference & inspiration is directly from both memories and from life experiences.
I sometimes work from photos that I have captured myself, I use them as a way of note making, I do not strive to create a photo likeness, but to capture the 'essence' of the subject & the moment.
My artistic education was gained at Kingston College of Art & Design where I studied Fine Art & Ceramics, the latter became the discipline I pursued in my earlier years. From an apprenticeship in a Commercial Pottery studio, to teaching part time at Hornsey School of Art, going on to running my own co-operative ceramic & mosaic workshop.
Exhibiting my work at various local venues, the Ice House Gallery, & the Morley Gallery whilst being a member of The London Potters group.
There were some years, where other priorities took precedence over my passion for art, and things were put on hold. Throughout this period I was yearning to get back into what made me most happy, I took a decision to return to what I love & do best, as soon as I could.
For some time I had been pursuing & developing my art, and now work in a variety of disciplines, including traditional oil & water colours, together with various forms of original print making.
All through the time of the pandemic, I continued to work in self isolation & in lock down, with my ability to lose myself in my work and all things creative, I can say it kept me relatively sane.
It was during this period that people were discovery ZOOM and many art groups started working online, sharing their ideas. Work shops were popping up, and online life drawing became one of my pursuits, which remain to this day a useful way to have access to models from around the globe.
